Abandoned MoniesBefore May 1st each year, Clerk’s Finance is required by Florida Statute Chapter 717 to remit unclaimed funds to the Florida Department of Financial Services. This listing includes but is not limited to monies from the court registry, refunds from foreclosure and tax deed sales and overpayments above $10.00. These funds are presumed unclaimed during the previous calendar year after due diligence was performed to locate the owner. Citizens can visit fltreasurehunt.gov to see if their name is on the list and make a claim through the Department of Financial Services. Once the monies are remitted to the State, the Clerk no longer has access to the funds. Unclaimed ChecksIn addition, Clerk’s Finance publishes a list of unclaimed checks each July, in accordance with Florida Statute 116.21. Many of these are for uncashed jury service checks and other court-related checks. If a claim is not received by September 1st, the money is remitted to the State of Florida’s fine and forfeiture fund and is no longer available to the owner.
