Malcom Thompson was elected as the Osceola County Clerk of Court on November 4, 2008, and began supervising over 180 employees in the many faceted functions of the Clerk's office upon assuming office on January 6, 2009.
Mr. Thompson has been a resident of Osceola County since the early 80’s and since then has always worked in service to the people of Osceola County. Malcom and his wife Elizabeth were married in Kissimmee and have since made Osceola County their home. They have two sons; Troy, who lives in St. Cloud with his wife Glorimar and three beautiful children, and Anthony, who works as a Sergeant for the Sanibel Police Department and lives in Ft. Myers with his wife Dyan and their wonderful children.
Malcom’s history of public service began early in life. After graduating from high school he began serving his country in the United States Marine Corps as a Sergeant in Vietnam. After discharge from the Service, he joined the Fort Myers Police Department in 1972. While working full time he went to college full time. He earned his Bachelor’s degree from the University of South Florida. Years later he received his MBA. He was a member of Omicron Delta Kappa and Vice President of the Student Affairs Council.
Mr. Thompson left the Fort Myers Police Department as a Sergeant and joined the Kissimmee Police Department in 1984. Having had experience in numerous areas of law enforcement, Malcom established the Kissimmee Police Department first S.W.A.T. team which he lead for almost 10 years. He was also instrumental in establishing the K-9 program, and rewriting the F.T.O. manual. Malcom was a Florida State Certified Law Enforcement instructor who taught for 23 years. He enjoyed teaching high liability areas such as defensive tactics firearms & K-9, and was recognized throughout the state as a black belt champion.
On 3 June 1997 while handling a complaint, Malcom was shot four times by a suspect who had numerous outstanding warrants. Unknown to Officer Thompson, the suspect had just committed a home invasion, aggravated battery, and car-jacking. After shooting Officer Thompson, the suspect jumped into a taxi and held the firearm to the driver's head. Officer Thompson was able to eliminate the threat and save the taxi driver's life. By all accounts any one of the wounds Officer Thompson received could have been fatal. His life was saved by the Kissimmee Police Fire Rescue, Osceola County Sheriff’s Department and O.R.M.C.; but most of all by the grace of God, and prayers from across the nation.
In 1998 Malcom was recognized in a Rose Garden ceremony at the White House in Washington D.C. by President Clinton and Attorney General Janet Reno. He received the N.A.P.O. “Top Cop” in the Nation, and the Medal of Honor from the Kissimmee Police Department. During his career as a police officer, he is credited with saving three lives, each on separate occasions.
Malcom’s mission in life has always been public service and he feels a deep and abiding connection with the citizens of Osceola County. The driving force through the election process was his desire to give back to his Community. It is a community he loves and credits with his life.
As the newly elected Clerk of Court, Malcom will work hard to assure that every citizen is treated with respect and dignity and is provided the service they so richly deserve.
Malcom is honored to be your Clerk of Court and will work diligently in his mission of service to the people.
